Introduction:

Mechanical Engineering has the broadest professional base among all engineering disciplines. Traditionally, the skills of mechanical engineers are required to translate basic scientific knowledge into machines and devices that can handle human and technical problems more efficiently. It is difficult to pinpoint any item associated with daily life that has not availed of the services of professional mechanical engineers directly or indirectly at some stage or other of its production. From the invention of the wheel to the design of steam, internal combustion and jet engines, this discipline of engineering had the most profound impact on shaping human life and civilization. Spanning across several disciplines of engineering and technology, mechanical engineers play pivotal roles in development, operation and manufacturing of new machines, devices and processes in diverse areas. From air conditioners to aircrafts, biomechanics to robotics, Computer integrated manufacturing to power generation, terrestrial transportation to exploration of the outer space, the scope and range of Mechanical Engineering is unmatched.

Objectives:

The broad educational objective of undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering is to provide a solid foundation of mathematical, scientific and engineering knowledge and to develop the engineering and research skills that will serve students throughout their careers. The program aims to provide Pakistan with high caliber engineers needed for the development of the country. In the next ten years humanity in general and Pakistan in particular faces some grand challenges. These are energy, security, climate change, availability of water, improving the living standards of the masses, poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Coupled with recent financial woes of the world economic system the stage is set for very tough times ahead. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at CIIT Sahiwal aims to play a leading role in meeting these challenges head on.
